If you used to wake up thinking about the most strategic way to whoop your little sister at Stratego, you want to pay attention to our iPhone app review of Flag Wars.
In the Flag Wars iPhone app you control one side of a board (either red or blue). Use one of the app’s 25 pre-configured game boards, or use the pregame time to arrange your game pieces however you wish.
If you are unfamiliar with the game Stratego, allow me to explain. You have tiles numbered 1 through 9, a scout and a collection of six bomb tiles. The lower the number on the tile the better its rank. If two tiles come together, the tile with the lower number wins the match and the lower tile is removed from the board. For example, if a 2 tile and a 7 tile came together, the 2 tile would win.
The idea is to invade your opponent’s side of the board, find and capture their flag, without knowing what their tiles are until you collide.
Some familiar rules apply. Tiles that touch bombs are killed, unless that tile is an 8. Eights trump bombs. Any number tile can capture the flag. A helpful “How to Play” section in the app can help you get a refresher if you need it.
The Flag Wars iPhone app utilizes Game Center exclusively for gameplay. That means there is no computer to play against, and you must have a data connection (Wi-Fi or cellular) to use the app.
To keep the game moving, Flag Wars uses an awesome timer system. Each player has 20 second to complete a move or else their turn is skipped. I love this feature.
Layout & Design:
The Flag Wars iPhone app is extremely simple. There aren’t any advanced graphics or even any options to play on different boards.
I was a little disappointed about this. The game pieces aren’t really retro or classic. They’re just plain. If the developers were hoping that gameplay would be the real star of the show, they got their wish.
This game definitely plays better on the iPad than the iPhone. On the iPhone I experienced a few responsiveness issues, and even missed a turn once because the play clock ran out before I could get the app to move a tile. I did not experience any of these issues on the iPad.
How much is a trip down memory lane? The gameplay style of the Flag Wars iPhone app is timeless, and thankfully it only costs $.99 to download the app from iTunes.
Despite my concerns about the app’s overly simple graphics and lack of customizable features, I’ll keep playing this game for a long time. Flag Wars choose the right classic game to hijack. It’s just that good, without even trying.
Flag Wars iPhone app requires iOS 4.1 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
