If you (or your dog) are looking for love, you owe it to yourself to give this iPhone app review of DoggyDatez a shot.
As for our iPhone app review, like most match making apps, the DoggyDatez app lets you create a profile, only this time it’s a profile about you and your favorite four-legged canine. The app makes them just as important as you are. And the dog-friendly fun is just getting started.
Using your iPhone’s GPS, the DoggyDatez iPhone app lets you check in with your pooch at your favorite prowls. Like Foursquare, you “mark” your territory. Maybe you and Rover like to take an afternoon walk around the park. Mark it. Or, if someone else has it marked, hijack their mark and make it yours, just like a dog would.
Yeah, that’s where this app lost me. The idea of a pet-friendly dating app is interesting. Marking locations with so much cyber pee is a bit much.
Despite of (or perhaps because of) the overflow of puppy love in this iPhone app, it’s still a cute idea. You can search for and add friends with the DoggyDatez iPhone app, invite people via email, and exchange messages via the “woof” system. Even add and tag pics.
Once your dog-tastic profile is populated, navigating DoggyDatez is pretty easy. A basic bottom tab design allows you to maintain your profile, territories, messages, friends and wall with ease.
The rest of the app has a straightforward, iPhone-style design, right down to the back buttons and other page options. It’s nothing revolutionary, but it is clean and easy to use.
In an app like DoggieDatez, success depends on one thing: participation. If you live in an area where users are thin on the ground, it’s going to be hard to get much out of DoggyDatez. If you live in a dog-centric town with a lot of activity and participants, this idea is going to rock.
Participation and limitations aside, I have a few functionality concerns about the DoggyDatez iPhone app.
The map function works quite well to show you your own check ins, however I couldn’t get it to show me any other users. So I couldn’t tell you what areas are using this app right now, all I could see was a big blank map.
Searching for friends is a little difficult as well. There’s nowhere to check on pending requests, or look through user lists by location. It definitely needs some work.
On the positive side, DoggyDatez is completely free to download and use. If you can talk a few local friends into using it with you, this app has the potential to be a lot of fun.
An expanded user base and a few tweaks could make DoggyDatez the Facebook for pets. Get on that guys.
DoggyDatez iPhone app requires iOS 4.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
