With all that careening around, missing exits and getting lost, it sometimes feels like there should be just a bit more order to taking a trip. Thankfully, Speed Tracker by developer AppAnnex is just the tool you need to add some statistics to your journeys. The app is a one-stop hub for all your traveling needs, and in turn, it can even makes going on a trip more fun.
Concept and Functionality
Speed Tracker is, to put it simply, the dashboard above the dash. The app provides all kinds of information about your various travels using only your GPS and your iPhone’s processor. In a sense, the app is a bit like a stopwatch. Hit the go button, and Speed Tracker will tally up just how far you go, how quickly you did it, and how fast you went on average. The app will also tell you how fast you’re going in the moment, and I have to admit, it was quite accurate most of the time. When it did goof, it was often so off as to be funny, but these moments were few and far between. Speed Tracker also features the ability to keep trip logs, displaying information about various legs of your Journey. This is particularly useful if you travel a lot and want to store statistics about different voyages. Aside from that, the app also serves as a GPS locating map. However, there’s currently no integration with navigational services like Google Navigation, making the map offering a bit stale. On the whole, though, I was very impressed with how functional Speed Tracker was. The app tracked my every move and logged it just as I wanted it to, making it easily one of the best trip tracker apps I’ve ever seen.
Speed Tracker keeps things simple with its design. The main menu features a speedometer that behaves just like the one on your car does. From there, information is available under the trip-log tab in a gun-metal grey that accents the (likely) color of your dashboard. Speaking of dashes, Speed Tracker comes with a cool HUD feature that displays your current speed alarm-clock style, giving the app a sort of James Bond feel. Overall, the design is fluid and easy to navigate, though the lack of any actual navigation is still a pain in the butt.
Speed Tracker is currently priced at $ .99, making the app an absolute steal if you think its features sound good. Sure, the app is essentially just an odometer with a speedometer attached. But for a dollar you’ll get rock-solid tracking of both these elements, as well as the ability to log several trips and review the data later. It makes traveling fun, and it works like a charm. And at such a low price, Speed Tracker is an easy recommendation for any road warrior.
Speed Tracker requires iOS 4.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
