ScAPPergories iPhone App Video Review
Do you like word games for the iPhone? Do you like Scattegories? If so, then scAPPergories (bitdrome SRL) may just be your new best mate. The app offers heaps of category-themed wordplay with copious amounts of online potential to boot. With a stellar price, brilliant graphics, and a fun feel, the app is an absolute steal.
Concept and Gameplay
The plot behind scAPPergories is told rather ambiguously, but the basics remain: A group of Smurf-like creatures evolve 2001: A Space Odyssey style into wordplay fiends. To help them out, you’ll need to come up with big words that begin with each letter they throw out. You’ll also have to match the category they provide, which can be anything from a common first name to a fruit or vegetable. The monsters then rate your words based on length, letter combination, and—of course—correctness. It’s great fun, and depending on the category and letter, can be quite the challenge.
I was very impressed with the amount of words and phrases the app knew. I tried to bust the cartoon blokes as often as possible by throwing them curveball combinations, but they nailed almost every one. You can’t yet trick them into thinking yogurt is a fruit or vegetable, but if you can imagine a legitimate response, they’ll always take it. All in all, it means the focus really is on your ability to be creative. This comes as a tremendous boon for wordplay junkies.
Design and Graphics
What I appreciated most about scAPPergories was its excellent design. The app feels cartoony, but not so as badly as to be childish. Likewise, the intro animations and were a great way to kick things off.
The included game modes were all lovely, though the higher difficulty levels were certainly justified in being, you know . . . difficult. Normal was quite challenging on hits own, while the “Impossible” setting was true to its name. Either way, this comes as a boon, as a cheap experience would have been neither fun nor rewarding.
The online capabilities were fantastic as well. The app includes the option to play opponents over Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, as well as Game Center, or one of the in-app tables. It makes finding a pick-up game a cinch, and considering how well the game works in a multiplayer setting, scAPPergories is quite the time waster.
Overall Fun and Value
Priced at the always pleasant ninety-nine cents, scAPPergories is an absolute bargain. The app’s hours of fun gameplay, wealth of multiplayer options, and fabulous design make it one of the more pleasing word games to emerge for the iPhone in recent memory. If your a fan of word games, you owe it to yourself to check scAPPergories out.
scAPPergories requires iOS 4.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
