Have you grown tired of the same old Doodle Jump gameplay on your iPhone? Are you pining for a game with a similar face, but a breath of fresh air? If so, then Piggy Bounce by developer Squeevi may just be your ticket to ride. The app offers Doodle-inspired jumping gameplay, tight multiplayer, and even Game Center achievements to tickle your restless pickle.

Concept and Gameplay

Piggy Bounce’s gameplay is certainly nothing new: The game allows users to play as a pig that jumps up and over from platform to platform, reaching far up into the sky. This style of mechanic harks back to previous iOS classics like Doodle Jump and PapiJump, but that isn’t to say the game is stale. Piggy Bounce has done a great job putting a new face on an old idea. To begin with, the game allows players to go sidewise as well as up, which is an instant leg up over both PapiJump and Doodle Jump. The game also features the same set of various platforms to keep things interesting. Users will have to be wary of cracked boards, moving platforms, and even spiked insta-death landing pads. Add in nearby birds and the ability to “super jump” by landing on trampoline-style platforms, and you’ve got quite the mix.

Design and Graphics

All that being said, the developers have really had to stretch to keep the gameplay consistently fresh in design. Game Center integration brings leader boards and achievements to the mix, adding a bit of a carrot-on-a-stick appeal to the game. The addition of two-player multiplayer is also very much appreciated, as the option to play with strangers over the internet is always fun. However, it’s only just barely enough to keep the repetitive design afloat. Like Doodle Jump before it, Piggy Bounce relies heavily on its addictive nature for replay value. Without the drive to best your previous score, there’s really not a lot to keep you coming back to Piggy Bounce’s barn. That’s not to say the game isn’t fun, however. It’s a blast, though perhaps one that will wear thin after thirty minutes of gameplay.

Thankfully, the title looks fantastic on the iPhone’s Retina Display. The graphics are cutesy and light, and the animations are great as well. Even the country style background music adds to the atmosphere, creating a lush, cartoony gaming environment.

Overall Value

Piggy Bounce’s one dollar price in the App Store is perhaps its biggest saving grace. The app is deliciously fun, offers great graphics and addictive gameplay, and at a smooth one hundred pennies, it’s a bargain that really can’t be beat. Wether you’re a fan of Doodle Jump or not, you owe it to yourself to try this remake.
