Photo Quiz Challenge iPhone Video App Review
So you think your memory is pretty good, eh? If so, then take your observant tush to the front, mister: Photo Quiz Challenge by developer Daniele Antonietti will test your memorizing skills to the max (and likely set you in your place).
Concept and Gameplay
Photo Quiz Challenge features a premise that’s most closely related to the classic “one of these things is not like the other” picture games you likely played as a child. However, more often than not Photo Quiz Challenge isn’t asking you to find minute differences between two photos, but rather memorize every last detail of a single shot. You’re give a picture to look at for several seconds, and then you’re asked a question about the picture. The question can be as easy as, “How many people did you see?” or as difficult as “How many hairs did the third chap on the left have?” There’s not a lot of gradient between the two, actually, which was often a bit of a problem. Having the questions build in difficulty over time might have made for smoother gameplay, as it often feels like the questions are jumping all across the map. That being said, the premise is sound and the game itself is a fun challenge. Photo Quiz Challenge also features an online mode, as well as Game Center integration, adding some competitiveness to keep the ball rolling. I do wish there had been an option to select a photo category, or even a type of question, however. I often didn’t know what I was looking for in a photo, which added to the mystique of the app when it wasn’t making everything bloody difficult. Being able to sift between counting questions, minor details questions, etc. would be a tremendous addition to the gameplay.
Graphics and Design
During my review of Photo Quiz Challenge, I found the app to be a bit of a design mess. The menus and features are all very functional, but a bit slapdash in appearance. Some smoother intertextual menus would be appreciated, as well as in-app help files to assist new players. The game’s concept isn’t a difficult one to grasp, but even a nudge in the right direction would be better than nothing. If you’re like me, you’ll also find the sounds very irritating—I had the game on mute almost instantly.
Photo Quiz Challenge’s biggest boon is perhaps its pricing. The app is hardly hefty, weighing in at $ .99 in the App Store. The gameplay, though sporadic, is quite fun, and is guaranteed to eat up a few minutes on the commute or in the queue. But with a wealth of other puzzle games on the market for the same price, Photo Quiz Challenge is a hard sell as-is. However, with a few design tweaks and pacing corrections, the game could certainly have a bright future.
Photo Quiz Challenge requires iOS 4.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
