I love words. Long words. Short words. Hard words. Easy words. I am occasionally driven to distraction by my adoration of words. Before I get sidetracked by verbose pontifications, let me mention the amazing iPhone app that inspired my diatribe.
Medley iPhone app from developer Seza Waller combines a little modern iPhone pizzazz with a classic word game that always gets me thinking, anagrams. I would not be throwing out a gargantuan volume of SAT words if this app was any less exceptional.
Any app that challenges a “wordie” such as me merits a little extra effort in the vocabulary department. Strap on your thinking cap and try to keep track of all the words with five letters or more that appear in my glowing iPhone app review of Medley.
I rapidly became ravenously enamored with Medley iPhone app. There are two game modes, the classic style game and a puzzle style game. You are presented with a series of letters. In classic mode there are five jumbled words on one board. Puzzle presents you with one word at a time. Tap two letters to make them swap places. Arrange the letters into the right words to win points.
The timing element adds a little something special to the game play. You cannot just sit there swapping letters randomly until you find a word. Finish identifying your words and a bonus word before the timer runs out to earn extra points.
So, what’s the point of points? They help you open additional levels of difficulty in Medley iPhone app. There are four different levels to play: easy, medium, advanced and challenge. As you go the words get longer and harder. Challenge mode is a combination of Medley’s other levels, combining words of different lengths and difficulty for a unique experience.
Warning: Medley iPhone app is not for the faint of heart. The “easy” levels are five letter words, and it only gets harder from there. Medley iPhone app will definitely stretch your vocabulary even if you are a devout reader.
Layout & Design:
Despite the classic nature of the anagram style game, Medley iPhone app is all dolled up in a darling user interface, complete with a helpful animated owl who may help you with your words. I was pleased to find an easy to use layout and interesting though not exactly innovative blue night sky design throughout the app.
Users may find the dedicated help option useful while playing. On the game board click the question mark, located in the upper right-hand corner, to review game rules and tips for playing.
Good news! Medley iPhone app costs much less than a dictionary and stealthily imparts vocabulary lessons to users through fun game play. I believe the price tag of $.99 is extremely reasonable, considering the high level of difficulty that is sure to impart an extended shelf life to Medley iPhone app.
Medley iPhone app requires iOS 4.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
