English-Spanish Reference Dictionary, by developer Word Magic Software, provides a language reference experience for the iPhone and iPad that’s almost too expansive. The app’s killer interface, useful search functions, and—of course—massive list of words and phrases, make it a great way to hone your Spanish skills and knowledge. The price is a bit high, but for the features offered, it’s still a great deal.
Concept and Functionality
As a dictionary (of sorts) English-Spanish Reference Dictionary is a fantastic utility for learning some new words in both Spanish and English. The handy query bar along the left makes searching for a confusing word easy in both languages, while the flags along the top make swapping modes simple, too. The definitions themselves are solid, and the included extras (synonyms, multiple translations, etc.) make it a detailed experience.
On top of just being a dictionary, though, English-Spanish Reference Dictionary offers the ability to conjugate verbs. This comes as a handy utility for those looking to finish up some Spanish homework, or brush up on spoken verb tenses, but it’s currently only a one-way street: There’s no English verb conjugating, meaning those looking to improve their English are out of luck.
Another of English-Spanish Reference Dictionary’s boons is inherent to its design: The app allows users to search for similar terms based on conceptual criteria. This means if you’re on the entry for “dingo,” your Word Magic search will return other entries like “dog,” “Australia,” and “creepy.” That last one was a joke, but it’s still a wonderful concept.
I liked the included settings a lot, as well. Users can pick the voice they want the reader to sound like, and as the U.K. Male voice is hilarious, I see no reason why one would want it any other way. Accessing features could not be easier, either, using the app’s toolbar along the top.
It’s worth noting that English-Spanish Reference Dictionary treats words and phrases alike as separate entries. This means there’s a truly frightening number of idioms available, ranging from “dismantling of trade barriers” to “tabaco de calidad superior.” It’s an eclectic mix, but it makes the app no harder to search through, so we’ll praise the designer’s focus on diversity.
English-Spanish Reference Dictionary is certainly a tad pricy, clocking in at $7.99 in the App Store. That being said, the app is universal, and looks great on both the iPad and iPhone. The included definitions, wealth of terms, and drop-down verb conjugator make it a great study buddy, and with spoken pronunciations, learning new words could not be simpler.
If you’re looking for the best Spanish dictionary for iOS, English-Spanish Reference Dictionary may be your best bet. It’s comprehensive, expansive, and though slightly pricy, worth every penny.
English-Spanish Reference Dictionary requires iOS 3.1 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
