In a world where GPS and location services are improving our connectedness, its iPhone apps like Kuipp, by developer Kuipp, LLC, that make sure the envelope gets pushed. This excellent, local, and question-based iPhone app is an upstart with a lot of promise—and a lot of answers to boot! Let’s delve deeper with my iPhone app review and explore the benefits of Kuipp.
What Kuipp offers is a unique service that might have been hinted at in other social networking tools, but hasn’t been fully realized until now. The app allows you to create a custom profile, specify your current location, and then ask questions about local events, sales, restaurants, and music—or anything else that might bother you, too. The iPhone app delivers these questions to the public via a questionnaire spread. If anyone else in the area has a good reply, they can quickly shoot off a comment and clue you in. It’s a simple concept, but one that has boundless benefits: Not to mention a certain cool factor.
Users are required to setup an account with Kuipp, which is usually a drag. However, the app allows you to use Facebook connect to do the dirty work, saving you any unnecessary pain. Once inside you’re free to ask questions or answer them at your own pace. You can also follow other users, or search for your friends on Kuipp via Facebook, Twitter, or Email. The app offers a multitude of other minute features that smooth the experience, like the ability to send private messages between users. Kuipp even rewards you for answering and posing questions, earning you profile points, achievements, and new avatar unlockables. This adds just a bit more incentive to answering questions, and its just plain fun, too.
After performing my iPhone app review, I was very impressed with Kuipp’s solid design. The app looks fantastic, featuring a very Web 2.0, darkly-toned interface that feels right at home on the iPhone. Setting up an account was a cinch, and I was asking questions within a matter of minutes. There’s a lot of complexity here, but on the whole the experience has been made user-friendly through the brilliantly orchestrated UI. Asking a question, solving a problem, changing your location, following new users, and editing your profile are all a few button clicks away using the app’s bottom navigation bar. Kuipp reminds me a lot of both Foursquare and Gowalla, but as it offers a wealth of new and innovative features, the design is definitely more of an homage than it is a theft.
Best of all, Kuipp is one-hundred percent free in the AppStore. If you’re looking for interesting local news, or have a question about good barbecue in the area, there’s no reason not to have Kuipp loaded on your device. It’s a brilliant app that (hopefully) will only get bigger with your help.
Kuipp requires iOS 3.2 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
