Keeping tabs on your network just got a lot easier with the JaNet – Network Tools iPhone app from developer Michele Nucci. Now network administrators can monitor performance, identify security risks, track devices and more from one elegant app compatible with the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch.

I was barely a few moments in to my iPhone app review process when I realized the JaNet – Network Tools iPhone app was clearly built by IT professionals. This app doesn’t just provide a ping service, locate devices on local and remote networks, or scan ports for security protocols. It does each of those functions easily, integrates results, and performs a dozen other functions with ease. Let me list a few of my favorites.

JaNet – Network Tools allows users to scan ports for security risks, identify devices currently running on a network, scan local Wi-Fi networks for active IP addresses and more, wake up devices on local or remote networks, gather IP, MAC and service provider details, perform DNS queries, execute easy performance tests, and carry out a host of other features.

Like I said, this app ain’t fooling. It even interfaces with Apple’s Bonjour browser to locate area tools. Large companies, small businesses and personal end users alike will find useful information readily available to assist them in managing their network devices.

User Interface:

For an iPhone app with plethora of functions, JaNet – Network Tools manages to make navigation simple. I particularly like the integrated search results. On the home screen, network tools are organized by type. Tap on one to get started, and then input an IP address or local network name to get started. Tap the first icon on the bottom left-hand side to launch additional results without having to reenter the IP address or hostname. For example, search under “Port Scan” for detailed results. Tap the lower left-hand icon with the arrow to view ping, traceroute, whois and DNS query results.

Organization is king and JaNet – Network Tools passes my user interface test with flying colors.

Practical Application:

In addition to creating network information logs on your handy Apple product, JaNet – Network Tools allows you to copy and share results for easy reporting. If you notice a network issue, simply tap the lower left-hand corner icon and pass the information along to be addressed.

The group option creates collections of IP addresses for easy maintenance. Perform a search then add the results to a group. Create custom groups to identify specific types of employees or locations. On a home office level, use this app to find out if your information is at risk or to identify unknown users leeching off your wireless signal.

With its eclectic skillset and elegant design, JaNet – Network Tools is on its way to becoming a fast favorite with network administrators and home owners alike. The recent update to version 1.1.1 resolved several minor system bugs and typos to create a seamless user experience.
