Hi-Lo iPhone app, by developer HG Apps Store, is a unique innovation on the classic Sudoku style puzzle. The iPhone app offers a wealth of fun, grid-based gameplay, but only enough to get you started before in-app purchases become necessary. Although Hi-Lo is a tease, it’s darn good one!
If you have ever played the runaway hit puzzle game Sudoku, then you know more or less what Hi-Lo has to offer. My iPhone app review discovered that the game presents you with an empty grid arranged in either a four-by-four or five-by-five pattern. It’s then your job to arrange numbers one through five (or four if that’s the case) across each row and column without any repetition. In a way, it’s like playing connect-four with a very serious puzzle bent.
What Hi-Lo adds to the mix is a set of a greater-than-less-than signs. Not only do you have to accurately arrange the numbers across the game board, but you’ll also have to worry about following the math around you. You cannot put a three next to a four if there’s a greater-than sign between the blocks, for example. This would theoretically intensify the game and make it harder. However, it was my experience that Hi-Lo’s most advanced offering was far tamer than some of the easier Sudoku puzzles I’ve played.
The new additions intend to toughen the game, but with a bit of logic they become extra information, making the task easier. This isn’t a bad thing: In fact I found Hi-Lo to be a very rewarding experience, more so than Sudoku. But it’s worth noting that this is not automatically a step-up for hardcore Sudoku fans.
Hi-Lo sports a very basic, iOS-inspired interface that keeps things simple and elegant. Tabs along the bottom split up the app’s features, while simply clicking on a puzzle pack accesses the goodies inside. The free version of the app comes with ten puzzles of varying difficulty. If you like what you see, much more can be had for as little as a dollar via in-app purchase.
I appreciated immensely that the iPhone app is not ad-supported. There’s currently no Game Center or OpenFeint integration, though, which is a shame. I’d very much like to brag about my incredibly quick times via the Internet. Likewise, there’s as of yet no Facebook or Twitter integration, either.
Overall Value and Puzzling Fun
Hi-Lo may not offer enough content to keep you entertained without an in-app purchase, but the game mechanic offered here truly is good enough to warrant a test-drive. If you’re a fan of Sudoku, this free app will expand your horizons, and if you just want a sleek puzzle app for the iPhone, it’ll deliver there as well.
Hi-Lo requires iOS 3.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
