Do you ever find yourself wondering what happens to all that extraneous data apps collect after you’ve deleted them from your iPhone? Or maybe you’re concerned about what exactly is going on underneath the hood of your iDevice’s gorgeous Retina Screen? Sadly mobile operating systems are just like computers in that they collect rubbish over time—rubbish that can potentially threaten your online identity. To help you out, developer ProtectStar has created iShredder free iPhone app, which is actually a safe and free way to remove unwanted data.
Design and Function
Essentially what iShredder offers is peace of mind: The app scans through all the files your system has marked for overwrite and slaps a big fat binary zero on top of them. This corrects a small, technical detail about the iOS platform that’s often overlooked—when you delete an app, its data is not automatically destroyed. Instead, the system marks it as unimportant, and other apps write over it. Using iShredder, you can guarantee that digital rubbish is long gone and safeguard yourself from invasive maneuvers by hackers.
The process itself is very straightforward within the app. The design is minimalistic, lending itself to ease-of-use, though some of the more technical bits do require an explanation. For example, the app offers four levels of secure erase for you to choose from, each with a unique flavor. The ample included help files make brushing up on your secure erase methods a cinch, but you’ll definitely want to give the guide a look before committing your iDevice to any procedures.
Each supplied erasure codec offers a more or less stringent amount of data deletion to fit your needs. Interestingly, Apple has put contact information into a separate data block which iShredder cannot access. So if you’re looking to keep those illicit text messages hidden after they’re deleted—à la Tiger Woods—you’ll have to go elsewhere.
As mentioned, the app is very easy to use, and a cinch to start up. Getting from app icon to the data-erasing loading bar took about a minute and a half. The process itself was speedy as well, and I felt confident in what iShredder had to offer after doing some reading. However, it is hard to tell if the app is actually doing anything. This is not a defragger, so no new space is opened up, and unless you test your phone by trying to retrieve deleted data, you’ll have to take the developer’s word that all those zeros have been juggled.
Trust issues aside, iShredder is completely free, and as it offers a solid peace of mind for the home user, it’s a hard bargain to pass up. If you’re worried about security, the app has you covered with room to spare, and at a price to match.
