Navigon Update Implements Augmented Reality and Robust Traffic for iOS

Navigon is a forward thinking developer that prefers to stay ahead of the pack, rather than follow trends. Thus, for those of you who own their turn-by-turn iPhone app, you may recognize regular updates and enhanced functionality are par for the course. But what I truly love is that they do not push updates for the sake of updating, rather, their updates are well thought out and implemented. Take, for example, the newly released update, MobileNavigator version 1.8. Navigon added augmented reality, deeper, more robust traffic data, and an optional safety cam.

Navigon already impressed many with their turn-by-turn iPhone app, but they have once again raised the bar with several new features. Their newly integrated “Traffic Check” feature utilizes data from Suna to depict the level of traffic you may endure in any given area along your route. You may also opt for the in-app upgrade thus allowing you to access “Traffic Live” rendering alternative routing suggestions and more robust data.

Additionally, if you wish to fork over additional upgrade dollars, Navigon version 1.8 offers safety cam, which pulls data from SCDB, a coveted database offering access to nearly 4,000 red light and speed cameras.  And, once you bypass the traffic cameras and arrive ahead of schedule, it is time to kick on the “Reality Scanner” augmented reality feature that provides a live camera view with overlapping data of notable areas of interest within your proximity.

Pricing for Navigon is hard to easily quantify, as this depends on what services you desire. For example, MobileNavigator US costs $34.99 at the time of this review. The Truck and Caravan Navigation add-on is $79.99, Traffic Live will cost you an additional $19.99 as an introductory offer, then $29.99 after April 28. As you can see, for full functionality the costs add up rather quickly. However, you often get what you pay for, and this is no exception. For the finest in turn-by-turn navigation, traffic, and additional services such as Panorama View 3d, you can’t go wrong with MobileNavigator 1.8.

Navigon MobileNavigator 1.8 iPhone app [ iTunes Link ] requires iOS 3.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad.
