Remember painstaking working your way through unit conversions in high school? Having to convert distance, temperature, weight, mass and more for hours on end? Or, have you needed to know the exchange rates for the English Pound, Japanese Yen, Canadian and American Dollar, yet had to dig all over the Internet just to locate the latest info? Say goodbye to those days and grab ConvertX, from Mallow-Tech, a serious app for quick and easy unit conversion for the iOS.

Functions:

I can’t think of any type of unit conversion that ConvertX doesn’t offer. Typical options like length, mass, acceleration, weight, frequency, temperature, volume and energy are offered. However, all sorts of unique and awesome unit conversions are also included, such as computer data transfer speed, age of planets, prefixes, pressure and stress, and weight on other planets. Not only that, but (perhaps most useful in today’s global economy) is the currency conversion option. Most major currencies are included, like Euro, Dollar, Rouble, Pound, Yuan/Renminbi, and Yen. There’s also the Krona, Dirham, Won, Ringgit and several more, appealing to all kinds of international travelers. Of course, you’ll need to be connected to a network for ConvertX to fetch the latest currency exchange rates. Once you’ve done this, it will save the rates for offline use, but I recommend staying online as the rates often fluctuate.

Graphical Layout:

Units are laid out in an easy-to-view, “input-to-output” layout. Basically, the unit you wish to convert from is on the left side, with the unit you are converting to on the right side. The keypad, unit conversion layout, and overall scheme are slick and appear very professional. At the bottom of the screen are options for a calculator, search, settings and help/info tabs. Finally, when converting, you can bookmark a particular conversion for later reference by tapping the star “+”at the top left-hand corner of the screen.

When booting up the screen, the user is given an intro image of typical unit conversions offered with ConvertX, however, tapping on these buttons doesn’t do anything (it’s just an intro screen, although I thought it was a conversion selection options box at first). It would be nice if these tabs actually led to different types of conversions, instead of just appearing at startup and disappearing.

Ease of Use:

Convertx loads quickly and converts smoothly. It’s a cinch to choose the type of unit conversion you would like and then enter in the digits. I have yet to see a better and more comprehensive unit conversion tool on the iPod Touch, iPhone or iPad. It’s a simple, yet powerful app with a lot of applications for business or pleasure.

Value:

At $0.99, Convertx is a really affordable app and will probably save you a lot of time and frustration. This is especially true for the currency conversion feature of ConvertX, with its up-to-date stats for many different exchange rates of different currencies throughout the world. The huge selection of units to convert to and from, the excellent layout and the simplicity of use is truly impressive, making Convertx one of the best converter apps on the market today.
