iPhone apps have been known to provide countless hours of gaming fun, simplification of life via utilities, a higher level of social connectivity, and yes, they even allow us to mimic the sounds of farts – whether we want to or not. However, iPhone apps can offer us much more than fun and games; now they can even bring sight to the blind, metaphorically.
Making a simple purchase and paying in cash may seem par for the course for you and I, however, for the millions who are blind, identifying the value on dollar bills can be a daunting task. In fact, in other countries, the currency is printed or manufactured in a variety of shapes, helping to discern the value simply by size. However, this is not the case for those who live with blindness in America. Hence, a new iPhone app called Looktel aims to resolve this difficult matter by reading the value of each dollar via the iPhone camera and “speaking” the amount out loud.

The Looktel iPhone app is able to utilize the iPhone camera features to scan dollar denominations in real time. Thus, those who access the application can simply move the phone back and forth in the proximity of the currency, and the value of each bill will be assessed and read aloud.
LookTel iPhone app [ iTunes Link ] requires iOS 4.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPod touch, and iPad.
