Functionality and Design:
For those of you who aren’t familiar with Dan Millman’s Life-Purpose System—which is the basis for Life Purpose on the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch—its essentially a numerology-based system designed to encourage and educate the common man. The point of Life Purpose is, I’m assuming, to make the central tenants of Millman’s philosophy clear, but this is attempted via mountains of text.
When first booted, the app presents the user with a spinning wheel of months, dates, and years. After the user’s birth date is entered, the app automatically calculates the number system around which the individual’s life is based. Life Purpose then creates a tailor-made list of texts that describe, define, and predict the life, characteristics, and spiritual goals of the user. Each of these is presented via in-app links, which lead to a basic text reader.
Whether or not that sounds appealing to you, it’s worth mentioning that the design of Life Purpose is extremely transparent. Beneath the generic field at sunrise image is an eBook, and I could never shake the feeling that the app really wanted to be a book, rather than an app. Each link within the app provides a page of literature for review, but that page is neither prettied up nor feature-rich to encourage reading. Granted, this isn’t Kindle for the iPad, but I felt like Life Purpose had stretched an app scaffold around a book.
Presumably, if you’re already interested in Dan Millman’s Life-Purpose System then you’ll have a ready-set interest in the Life Purpose iPhone app. If so, the app does provide a wealth of dense reading, including full access to Millman’s book, The Life You Were Born to Live. If that at all interests you, then you can’t go wrong for the $ .99 Life Purpose will cost you.
To cut a long story short, if you’re a fan of The Life You Were Born to Live, $ .99 will get you a book, a dolled-up interface, and custom-made links made for your birthdate. But if you are looking for a cohesive, well-designed look at numerology and the zodiac, this may not be an ideal solution.
