If you’re planning a trip to Italy’s Lake Como, and are willing to spend ten dollars on a dedicated travel guide that specializes in the most selective institutions the area has to offer, you’d be hard pressed to find a better iPhone app than LuxExclusive’s Lake Como. The app is absolutely loaded with information for your perusal, and its hefty price aside, the good looks and features it offers make it the best travel adviser in the iTunes AppStore.
Lake Como comes in both an iPhone and an iPad version (both are purchased for the same $9.99 fee) and I have to say, this thing looks gorgeous on the iPad’s larger display. The rich burgundy colors and golden accents give the app a warm leathery feel that’s bathed in style. On the left side of the app, pictures of the Lake Como area scroll by for your pleasure, while links to golf clubs, mountain resorts, restaurants, villa tours, beaches, and shopping locations are listed on the right. Each link is presented in a grid of lavishly designed icons, which once selected, produce a table of hand-selected items in the chosen category. For instance, clicking the hotel icon produces a left-hand list of the finest hotels Lake Como has to offer, with a larger window on the right detailing the specifics about each location. They layout could not look better, or be any easier to use.
Usefulness and Value:
Because I am not domiciled in the Lake Como area, I cannot entirely comment on the app’s travel use: The developers have opted to remove business information unless you’re actually holding your iDevice in Lombardy. This is one reason I’ve given the iPhone app a 4-star rating here, as I imagine being able to research locations before getting on a plane might be helpful. However, with so many well-designed lists available, as well as an Urban Spoon style spinning wheel and a nearby attractions option, Lake Como certainly offers everything the high-class tourist might need. Using the iPhone app to plan afternoon trips to the beach or day-holidays in the mountains is a snap, and the gorgeous user interface only makes the experience all the more pleasurable.
The only other setback to Lake Como is the potentially high price: $9.99 in the iTunes AppStore. Though cheap when compared to print-based travel guides, Lake Como is top-dollar for an iOS app. However, perhaps ten-dollars isn’t so steep a price when the destination and target market are considered.
Beyond a doubt, Lake Como is a fantastically useful iPhone app for the Lake Como traveller. And though it is expensive—and cannot be used outside the Lake Como area—its on-holiday benefits are certainly worth the lavish price of entry.
Lake Como iPhone app [ iTunes Link ] requires iOS 4.2 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
