Tired of the tiny keyboard built into the iPhone for sending text messages or emails? Do you find yourself waiting to reply to a long message via your computer instead of your iPod Touch because you can’t stand the annoyingly small keyboard on the iOS device? Enter Keyboard2, from developer Tal Shumski. It’s a stellar app that aims offer a more useful keyboard alternative, with some neat features!

Keyboard2 allows you to type on a much larger keypad, modified and distinctly different from the default keyboard offered on most iOS devices. This one has larger, more easier to press keys, numbers and popular symbols included on the main screen, and the text overlayed over the keyboard (with adjustable opacity). While Keyboard2 must be accessed from the app menu (it doesn’t totally replace the default keyboard), you can still copy, paste, email, text message and more directly from the app! Keyboard2 offers a wide array of customizable options, allowing users to modify their keyboard to meet their personal needs!

Controls:

Typing, be it for email, text messages or other uses is made much easier with the giant keys of Keyboard2. Keyboard2 also attempts to make better use of the screen space, by including numbers on the main keyboard (unlike the default iPhone keyboard) and a few commonly used symbols. Typing is Options included on the view text screen include copy, paste, send text as SMS, email (uses your default email address for sending emails), clear text from screen, Google search, and post on Twitter or on Facebook.

Changing the colors of the font, of the background, or the text size is as easy as swiping your fingers across the screen, or pinching. The opacity of the overlaid keyboard on the text can be altered as you see fit, by pinching on the keyboard to make it more or less opaque (see-through).

There’s also an option to push the keyboard below the text, so there isn’t any overlay. I found this to be very useful, as I prefer seeing all my text by itself and not put over the keyboard keys. The array of customization offered by Keyboard2 is great and really sets this app apart from the others!

Graphical Layout:

Overall the layout is nice, although the default color (white keys) can be a little hard to see. I prefer to switch to something with a little more contrast, although this is just a personal preference. The background resembles a faded scroll or old piece of paper, while it works for the app, I’m not sure I really like it. Finally, I wish there was an option that would save changes I made to the graphics (font, keyboard background, etc), so that I would have the same setting upon rebooting the app. These complaints aside, the layout and graphics are decent and do the job needed for Keyboard2 to be a very useful app.

Ease of Use:

Keyboard2 is really simple to use. Anyone who has used the default keyboard on an iPhone should be able to figure this one out. I really like how numbers are also included on the main alphabet keyboard. The lack of numbers on the default keyboard main screen is something that irks me, and I’m glad Keyboard2 included them. Also, the keys are HUGE, perfect for typing in a hurry without mis-typing. The iPhone has a rather tiny default keyboard, and I really like the size of Keyboard2 instead. It would be great if Keyboard2 would be chosen by Apple to totally replace the iPhone’s default keyboard!

Value:

Anyone who has been frustrated with the default keyboard on the iPod Touch or the iPhone will recognize the value of Keyboard2. There have been many times when I have put off typing on my iOS device because I did not want to deal with the tiny keys and other problems related to them. However, I found Keyboard2 to solve many of these complaints and I recommend it to others looking to broaden the usefulness of their iPhone, iPod touch or iPad. The $0.99 price tag is a small price to pay for the greater productivity and usefulness of Keyboard2, for both business and casual users.

Keyboard2 [ iTunes Link ] requires iOS 4.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
