Chaikin Power Tools, by Chaikin Stock Research, LLC, is a beautiful example of a well-designed app doing everything it’s supposed to and then some. If you’re a business professional, or just a chap with a few stocks on the market, Power Tools certainly has something to offer you. As a comprehensive stocks analysis utility that comes complete with news and Twitter integration—not to mention OptionsXpress for easy trading—the app could easily be described as the Apple Stocks application on steroids.

Functionality:

First and foremost, I am not a man with many assets on the stock market. However, the fact that I am not an active trader did not at all effect my impression of the benefits Chaikin Power Tools has to offer. When first launched, the app requests the user to setup an account with Chaikin Power Tools’ web services. Doing so creates a more streamlined experience with more investment ideas, but it is not required. Afterwards, users are free to add their stocks as they wish. All selected stocks are displayed in a very well-crafted grid format, with the application’s “power gauge” displayed alongside regular stock quotes. This gauge wages performance, news feed mentions, volume activity, and professional opinions to create a power ratio for each stock: That is to say it hazards a guess at how strong each stock is in real time. I found this feature incredibly useful, and very user-friendly. Within each stock, the user can also check Twitter, national news feeds, and stock charts for any new events relating to the stock. If any big stories come up, the app will alert you with a notification. Each of these features creates an easy-to-use, all-in-one stock browser that would go hand-in-hand with a morning meal, or a commute to work. Combined with the ability to trade stocks inside the app using OptionsXpress, Chaikin Power Tools is a force to be reckoned with.

Overall Design and Value:

My favorite part about the Chaikin Power Tools iPhone app is its price: Absolutely free. Excluding any extra web services, if you intend to use the app solely to view your stocks on a daily basis, you’d be hard pressed to do better than Chaikin Power Tools. Considering each of your stocks are available for detailed perusal at the mere click of a button, the design, benefits, and price of the app make it one of the premier finance applications in the App Store. Be prepared to stash the stock Stocks app in a corner folder of your iDevice: Chaikin Power Tools is by far a superior replacement.

Chaikin Power Tools iPhone app [ iTunes Link ] requires iOS 3.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
