Ah, the joys of gardening. It’s a sunny day, there are just a few clouds drifting overhead, the grass is green. Ready – Set – Water! Whether you have a green thumb, or just plain fat thumbs like me, you will really enjoy a rather addictive iPhone app game called Blossom by Braintonik!
Water on the Brain! Addictiveness:
So your garden is laid out nicely. You’re going to have beautiful blooming flowers soon. All you have to do is lay down a few feet of PVC and you’re set! It looks so simple. But this little floral brain twister proves to be quite a challenge. Just when you’re ready to start planting flowers in your own back yard the next level brings you back to reality! After a bit you will get the hang of rotating the pipes and making those flowers bloom but don’t get too confident! This is one of the best parts of the game in that it keeps you coming back for more! With the Blossom iPhone app you get access to over one hundred “gardens” to water you could be playing for quite a while! In addition, the game has a built in clock and each puzzle is numbered. Did you say garden number 48 in three minutes and ten seconds? I can beat that! Or can I?
User Friendliness / Visuals:
This app is very easy to use as the menus and buttons are self explanatory and simple to operate. As you water your garden the pipes rotate by touch and are easily manipulated as is the all important watering can. And when you’re facing a drought, just touch the hint button and the water starts flowing again! Each game is saved to pick up where you left off if you want and if you would rather play in silence this sound garden has a mute button. While the elements of the game are fun to play, one area that was lacking was the graphics. The game feels retro, but I am not convinced that this was intentional, and if it was, it too missed the mark a bit.
(Can’t) Stop and Smell the Roses! Fun Factor:
A great way to play Blossom is by going head to head with a competitor. Just pick any puzzle and solve it as fast as you can. Then hand it to your opponent and see if they can beat your time! There is nothing in the rule book that mentions anything about refraining from heckling, tickling, annoying, or singing while your opponent tries to solve the puzzle! And you can lay down a rule of only ONE hint button per puzzle! This is always good for interpretation as in “I didn’t mean to hit it twice!!” If you have more than two players you can play in teams. Just make sure your teammate points to the right pipe, “No not that one, THAT one!!”
Blossom iPhone app [ iTunes Link ] requires iOS 3.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. A specific version for iPad is in development, as is a lite version. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
