Ballroom dancing has been sweeping the nation.  With ABC’s ‘Dancing with the Stars’ heading into its twelfth season, I think it’s safe to say that dance fever isn’t going to fade any time soon.  But while you watch celebrities and their dance partners strut their stuff in front of the judges, you can finally learn some of those dance moves yourself right from your portable Apple device.  DanceSteps by Anthony Boudouvas teaches users the basic steps of four of ballroom’s most popular dance styles, giving users the confidence to get their groove on in proper form.

DanceSteps starts users off with four initial rhythms – Salsa, Rumba, Samba and Waltz – featuring two basic steps for each style.  In “Learning Mode”, users can practice the steps by moving their feet back and forth at their own pace, without beats, so they may get used to the footwork before adding in distracting music.  As you practice, colorful clouds will appear, providing useful notes to help both the male and female partners.  Learn how partners should hold each other, where body weight should rest and many other useful tips.

Thanks to the exceptionally simple interface, males need only hold the device in the default position, while females simply need to rotate the device upside down to view their footsteps (marked in red) from their perspective.  And, if you happen to be practicing with a partner, even better!  Couples can just put the device right between them to learn the steps together.  Once you’re comfortable, just tap the play button to begin practicing along with the rhythm.

The default screen, which appears upon startup, presents the dance floor with black footprints indicating the male movements and red footprints representing the female.  The rhythm controls reside in the bottom left corner, while the ‘i’ brings you to the page that allows you to pick the dance style, while explaining how to use the application on the right side of the screen.  Tap the blue arrow to learn more about each dance’s origins and history.  And, if you master these dances rather quickly, the application will never go to waste, for the developers promise there are more rhythms on the way!  Now all you need is to achieve celebrity status and you will surely have the upper hand during competition!

DanceSteps [iTunes Link] requires iPhone OS 3.2 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
