Visual Measurements and Dimensions Made Simple

Games, productivity tools, educational or entertaining…I’ve come to realize that when it comes to apps, no matter what kind, it’s a simple concept beautifully executed that reels me in.

Such is the case with My Measures and Dimensions, designed by SIS Software. The concept – store object dimensions visually. The execution – perfect. When you open the app, you can either tap “New” to take a picture or choose one from your photo library, or tap “Create Folder” at the bottom to get things organized. Once you take or select a picture, helpful instructions appear on the screen, although the method of adding dimensions is fairly intuitive.

Tap “Draw” at the bottom to add lines, angles or text. Tap with two fingers to place the object (dragging in or out to adjust in the case of angle), then drag the line, angle or text box in place on the image. You can customize it with a tap; add numbers, measurement units, and select from eight different colors to help organize if you have several measurements on one image. Erasing any measurements is as simple as tapping “Erase,” then the object.

Once you’ve jotted down all of the measurements you want on an image, you can either export the image via email, or save it to your photo library. You also have the option of going back to the main menu, selecting “Share” and doing either of those steps with an entire folder.

The great thing about My Measures is that it’s equally useful to novices and pros. Moving into a new house? Taking measurements is a pain, but having them laid over actual pictures of your new rooms makes it so much easier to plan. And I’m no contractor or carpenter, but I can’t imagine they have any tool simpler than this when it comes to notating measurements. For five dollars, this app will likely be well worth it if you need to keep track of measures and dimensions.

My Measurements [iTunes Link] & Dimensions is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. Requires iOS 3.0 or later. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
