If you need to get more in touch with your feelings or emotions – there’s an app for that. From the suitably-named Discover Yourself, Inc, Awareness is a new application for iOS devices that aims to get you more in tune with how you feel on a day to day basis.
Developed with psychotherapist Ronit Herzfeld, Awareness is an app that essentially asks you the question “what are you feeling right now?”. By taking the time to think about and reflect on our feelings, the idea is that you can learn what kind of situations lead to negative feelings, and begin to work towards eliminating sources of stress and worry in your life.
Awareness will randomly alert you at different times during the day, asking you how you’re feeling in that exact moment. The frequency, start and end times as well as alert sound can all be configured in the app’s Settings tab. Intelligently, Awareness works with iCal and avoids interrupting your existing scheduled items – although there is also the option to include them.
You can either wait until you receive an alert from the app, or enter you current feelings directly at any time by tapping on the Feelings icon. There is a long list of emotional categories to choose from, including angry, blah, fearful, happy, passionate, peaceful and sad – which each lead to a longer list of associated, and more specific feelings.
Once you have selected a feeling, this leads to a short meditation sequence with an animated video related to your reported emotion. After selecting ‘peaceful’ as my feeling, the app displayed “Take a deep breath. Enjoy the quiet in your body and mind. Know that this is your true state of being.” Similar meditation sequences are associated with each feelings category. Awareness features 20 clips in all.
After you have entered your feeling and proceeded past the meditation sequence, the app leaves you with an inspirational quote related to the feeling your recorded. There are 400 inspirational quotes included with the app, ensuring a good amount of variety in your day-to-day use of the app.
With Awareness, you can produce daily, weekly, monthly and yearly reports by tapping on the Reports tab, which let you view how your feelings have changed over a period of time, as well as highlight which ones occur most often.
Awareness is easy to use “feelings diary” that’s simple to incorporate into your everyday life. If you are someone that is naturally introspective, or would like to explore in more detail your own feelings and emotions then this app is definitely worth a look.
Awareness [iTunes Link] is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. Requires iOS 4.1 or later. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
