Simple concepts that are well-executed – always a winning combination when it comes to iPhone games. Mazonaut, created by iBright Studios, puts you in control of a cute little astronaut charged with the impossible task of making it through a never-ending maze as it’s destroyed by a black hole. Use the accelerometer to make him haul butt like his life depends on it, because it does.
There are no levels – however, each time you restart the game, the maze changes. This is probably my favorite feature, as it means you can pick up your phone and start a new game to kill a few minutes without having to navigate through the same old maze. And it really is never-ending; there’s no finishing this maze, it’s just a matter of seeing how far you can get and how high you can score.
The black hole is the enemy, but your mazonaut has a few toys to help him out. Anytime you see something – rocket packs, boots – pick them up, as they’re likely to launch you far ahead, blast everything in your way, or do something equally as useful. As you move through the maze, it begins to break apart and get sucked into the black hole behind you. It’s not always right on your heels; in fact, it’s quite slow at first, giving you time to get ahead. But there’s no going back – even if the destruction is far behind you, you can’t move left on the screen. That means if you make a wrong move, your only options are to either press “restart” or wait for the black hole to suck you away.
Other features: Turn the sound off and/or set it to your iPod music instead. And of course, you can set the calibration. For maze fans and those who love fast-paced, adrenaline-rush games, this is a good one for just $0.99.
