I’m not a rabidly competitive person when it comes to games in general. I’m usually in it just for fun. But something about air hockey brings out the bug-eyed lunatic in me. One look at Flick Hockey and I was ready to show my iPhone how things are done.
You can adjust the game to be 3, 5 or 7 goals, change the difficulty setting to easy, medium or hard, and set the paddle offset. That’s it – you’re ready to play. Thumbstar Games did a great job on the graphics for this one, with realistic sounds (and, of course, a roaring crowd soundtrack to cheer you on to glory). The “camera” angle tilts with you as you move the paddle, which adds a nice realistic effect.
One thing I didn’t realize until after a few games is that you don’t need to keep your finger on the paddle the entire time. If you lift up your finger during a game, then touch down on another part of the table, the paddle will reappear in that spot. The equivalent, I suppose, of picking up your paddle and setting it down again – makes for quicker movements in some situations.
The paddle is really quite responsive, and you don’t have to put your finger right on it to control it; the paddle actually sits just in front of your finger, so you can see what you’re doing. Overall, a great deal at $0.99 for air hockey fans – rabid or otherwise.
