Very rarely does one see a flying robot fall from his home in the sky. But with Flingy by cogniflame, users have no choice but to help the game’s namesake catapult himself back to his home and his dear wife, Mrs. Flingy. Navigating this clumsy character through a crazy web of spheres, users must balance physics with timing, building the kind of momentum that will fling Flingy back into orbit.
Flingy begins by asking users to enable OpenFeint, which allows them to connect with worldwide leaderboards, as well as share their scores via Facebook and Twitter. Simply sign in with your existing account, set up a new account, or skip this step.
Once you reach the main page, users will see icons to the left that allow them easy access to Facebook, Twitter and OpenFeint, while the Feedback button to the right supplies an easy template for sending ratings and comments regarding Flingy. The middle section features the self-explanatory Play, Scores and Credits buttons. Underneath, users will find buttons that allow them to mute the game’s sounds and music, along with the Help button (marked by a question mark). Clear and concise, the Help section explains the necessary moves, what each sphere indicates, a few useful tips, all accompanied by a video tutorial for more visual learners.
Press Play and users will discover an explanatory comic that vaguely tells the story of our main character and what must be done to help him return home. Users need only tap on any given sphere to attach Flingy. To release, tap anywhere, hopefully sending Flingy upward with great momentum. For the best results, release Flingy when the meter shows him in the green to ensure that he flings his furthest. While the Help section provides some tips for maximizing Flingy’s momentum, I found the rocket spheres to provide an ideal boost upward, while fuel spheres provide the ultimate momentum boost.
While I wouldn’t refer to Flingy as a game “unlike anything you’ve played before,” as I’ve played others much like it before, it certainly adds a dash of variety to the world of iPhone game applications. Using the fun, physics-based maneuvers to advance, one best be prepared to maintain a speedy pace, for you must create momentum. Move too slowly, and Flingy will simply flounder. But don’t be too sure of yourself, for even the slightest wrong gesture can send you falling back to the ground. Flingy requires observation and concentration in order to complete the mission!
