The game starts after selecting a car to drive and choosing a custom color for your ride. There are six cars to choose from, but I couldn’t notice any difference in the way any of them drive, so the extra choices don’t really add much in terms of gameplay. I started out with the VW Golf, then changed to the Bugatti Veyron – probably the fastest car on the planet – to no noticeable effect. If you want to customize your car, there are six colors to choose from before you begin the race.
The race itself is set against a desert background, which unfortunately, never changes. After placing one thumb on the “gas”, you start to move forward and other cars begin appearing on the road. Some vehicles you can maneuver around by tilting your iPhone from side to side, others have to be jumped over. That being said, it’s easier to forget about the steering altogether and just power down one lane and hop over everything that comes your way. This makes for a very boring game – as all you end up doing is tapping the “jump” button at regular intervals.
Crazy Taxi! gets to a point where it’s essentially impossible to go any further – the cars just don’t go fast enough to get to the later checkpoints in time. This leaves you feeling like the game is going to end no matter how “good” you are at it. There’s also no real reason to keep playing – I went from the VW to the Veyron after one game. There was nothing to unlock, nothing to achieve, just the one level and no other game options.
I like the concept of Crazy Taxi! but this game needs some work before I can recommend shelling out the $0.99 asking price.
