abc Notes: Create Colorful, Artistic To-Dos

Price: $4.99    Score: 9/10    By M. Schustermanabc

Typically, I’m not a fan of apps that take a simple concept (like sticky notes) and make them complex with unnecessary features. But ALSEDI Group has set up their sticky note application so brilliantly that getting comfortable with all of the features took a matter of seconds. I’m sold.

With abc Notes, what you have is like a slideshow of bulletin boards on which to stick your notes. When you open the app, there is a page already filled with notes that instruct you on how to use the app. Tap and drag a note around the page, and pinch to rotate or scale a note. Double-tap the screen to add a note (or use the “+” on the bottom), and double-tap a note to edit it. In edit mode, you can choose from an impressive variety of colors and styles for the note itself, as well as the font. You can also create badges with over a hundred different symbols to choose from.

There’s a few other features I didn’t expect, such as duplicating notes both on the same page and on separate pages. To duplicate a note on the page you are currently working on, just drag the note down to the “+” icon. You can also add a copy of that note to another page by dragging it down to the “Desktops” icon and selecting the desktop.

If looks matter to you, this app has them. The backgrounds are high-quality and beautiful, and when you really start to customize the look of the notes, the fonts, and the badges, your sticky notes start to look pretty darn cool. The only thing that didn’t work as I expected was pinching the note to expand; I expected this would also expand the text, sort of like a zoom effect, but the text remains the same size.

abc Notes has also just recently been updated, with the introduction of new features “Copy text” and “Copy image”. You can copy the note image (skin, text, angle, size…) and paste it to any eMail, or Pages app on iPad/iPhone.

I can’t honestly say I’ve ever found a sticky note app I used on any sort of regular basis. But I’m going to continue to use abc Notes and see how it works out. The price is fairly high for compared to other sticky note apps, but as with anything else, you get what you pay for.

abc Notes [iTunes Link] is compatible with iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad. Requires iOS 3.0 or later. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
