I can appreciate a great action-shot of an intense volleyball match, or detailed information on ice skating. But with Sporty Women V1 by Marko Games, I’m not quite sure what the intent is, and the set-up of the app itself leaves something to be desired.
The menu is divided into several categories, including surfing, gymnastics, skating and track and field. Each of those has a slideshow featuring women involved in the sport, tips for training, and a history of the sport. The way the menu is set up, it’s difficult to see that the text is actually links, and it’s slightly too small, making choosing a category somewhat of a guess.
The information and history seems solid, but it’s a simple white background with purple writing – no graphics, and no way to navigate within the section other than just scrolling all the way down.
One of the things that bothered me was the app’s promise of an “interactive map.” There is a map, but it’s not specific to this app at all. The link to tap on says “Find Athletic Locations and Information Near You,” but following through simply brings you to a map of the U.S. with a search function. The app does not detect your location, and is basically no different than going to Google Maps and typing “gyms in Pittsburgh.” I find this slightly misleading, as it adds no real value to the app itself.
Normally I try to imagine a situation in which someone would find an app useful. Even if all you’re looking for are good sports photos and history, I see nothing here that you couldn’t find online for free.
Sporty Women V1 [iTunes Link] requires iPhone OS 4.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone and iPod Touch. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
