In the category of low-key social networking games, PicTag is a unique concept that’s fairly well-executed.
The idea of PicTag, an app designed by Levinetic, is to start a chain of photographs, each with a label, that are connected in a few ways. First of all, you (or others) can pick a category for a game, such as pets or clothes, and all of the pictures must fit into this category. To add to the challenge, there are a few rules.
With each photo you enter, you must give it a label of three or less words. When you check out a game, you’ll see a grid with thumbnails of all the photos entered so far, starting with the most recent. Check out the last letter of the label on the most recent photo. The photo you upload to play the game must have a label that starts with the same letter.
For example, if you are in the category of “pets” and the last picture’s label reads “yawning cat,” you could upload a picture of your sleeping dog and label it “tired pup.” The next photo you (or another player) enters would have to have a label starting with the letter P.
The app is easy to navigate, with icons at the bottom allowing you to go back and forth between play, the top players, and your own profile. You can take a new photo from within the app, or upload one already in your photo library. And it is a fun way to socialize and share pics with others, while playing a laid-back, fun game and gaining points.
The only thing that took me a few seconds to get used to was reading the grid, because the newer photos are at the top. This is obviously so you don’t have to scroll down to see the last entry and enter a photo, which is great, but it makes seeing the pattern of the letters more difficult. (For example, the progression of “doG,” GerbiL,” “Little kitten,” would read “Little kitten,” GerbiL,” “doG.”
Overall, this is a fun game you can jump in or out of anytime, all while meeting a few new people, sharing your pictures and enjoying a photography challenge. A fun game for $0.99.
PicTag requires iPhone OS 3.1 or later and is compatible with iPhone.
