Cardmobili Eliminates Keychain Card Clutter

Rewards cards appear to be the new coupon, offered by nearly every store and company you can imagine as incentive for your continuing business.  All you have to do is sign up and you will be provided with a card that earns you points and saves you money (though not always immediately).  Except, much like your coupon clipping days, the convenience of saving can quickly morph into the nuisance of excessive baggage.  It doesn’t take long before all those rewards cards start cluttering your keychain and making your wallet bulge.

But, with Cardmobili by Cardmobili, users can collect all their cards within the convenience of a single application.  Cardmobili allows users to enter their rewards cards’ information, generating a barcode that can be scanned at the specified store, just as if the physical card were present.

When you begin, first-time users will have to jump all the way to the third button of the navigation bar – Sign up/Login.  Luckily, signing up for an account is free, allowing you to access hundreds of cards from around the world.  To sign up, simply enter your email address, set up a password and select your country.  Then, Cardmobili will spend the next few moments or so downloading data.  Once your account has successfully been created, you will then receive an email that provides the necessary instructions to activate your account.

Once you have logged in, your navigation bar will change to include a tab for inviting friends and editing your preferences.  To begin adding cards to your list, use the ‘Add Card’ tab to scroll through your choices or use the search bar at the top to look up a specific rewards card.  Cardmobili will automatically filter according to your country.  You may also wish to tap the magnifying glass icon next to the search bar in order to adjust your country or view cards by category.

When you find a card you want to add to your list, simply tap the name and add your card number and all other required information.  Use the ‘Done’ button in the top right corner to proceed.  Then, in order to use the card, you must first confirm what appears within Cardmobili corresponds exactly with your physical card.

Go to ‘My Cards’ and tap on any card that needs verification.  Then, tap the barcode icon next to the card’s image.  You must confirm that the generated barcode is an exact match to your card or else it will fail to work properly.  Tap ‘Yes’ if you are sure everything matches.  Continue to pick the proper layout of the barcode, at which point your final barcode will appear.  The magnification icon to the right will enlarge the barcode, turning it landscape and optimizing it for scanning.  The pencil/barcode icon below allows you to edit the barcode’s appearance if anything is incorrect.

The only down side is that not all scanners may be able to read the electronic barcode Cardmobili generates, and acceptance of such virtual cards is only guaranteed by Cardmobili partners.  However, even if some of your cards fail to be recognized by the stores’ barcode scanner, not all will succumb to this fate.  When you are sure certain cards are readable, simply remove those from your keychain or wallet, leaving only those that have failed to pass the test.  This will lighten your load, even if only a little bit, making your collection much more manageable.  And, if for some reason you’ve pulled the short straw in the rewards card department and none of them work, no need to fret – Cardmobili is FREE!  Just like signing up for your beloved rewards cards, there is no risk or cost in simply giving Cardmobili a try.

Cardmobili requires iPhone OS 3.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone and iPod Touch.

This looks like a great app, but what is the security behind this app? A person in a sense is revealing their personal shopping habits, and revealing their reward card numbers. What happens if the site gets hacked?
