Find the Word with Word Absurd

Price: $.99   Score: 10/10   By M. SchustermanWord

Are you a word search puzzle fanatic? For a buck, Word Absurd provides you with hours of entertainment and 100 puzzles with fun, crazy themes.

Designed by Trephination Proved Worthless LLC, Word Absurd has five categories of word search puzzles – culture, entertainment, leisure, science and sports – each of which has several subcategories. The words and titles are fun, such as “Non Stop Barf” in the travel subcategory of leisure, which includes words like “arrest,” “condoms,” “crabs,” “Daytona” and “thong.”

When you first open the app, you’ve got a menu with one puzzle. Tap the dice at the top to get a new random puzzle, or tap the “+” to choose one from the categories. You can add and delete as many puzzles as you want without finishing one, and when you do complete a puzzle, you can delete it and play it again later.

As far as gameplay goes, it’s super easy to navigate. Swipe your finger across a word and watch it appear in a box at the top to make sure you’ve touched the right letters. If you find a word, it’s highlighted in green. If not, it flashes red then goes back to normal. You can exit a puzzle to play another, then come back and your words will still be saved. Tap “Words” in the top right to see a list of the words you’re searching for, each of which is checked off as you find them. And if you’re a big cheater (kidding, no judgement here), tap “Solutions” to see the completed puzzle.

The design is simple and clean, and the puzzles are really fun. For this price, Word Absurd is really one of those apps that makes me realize how great apps can be. Spend less than you would on a pocket word search puzzle book, and you’ve got one hundred puzzles handy that won’t leave those smeary eraser markings if you mess up or want to play again. If you’re into word search puzzles, definitely throw down a dollar for this one.

Word Absurd requires iPhone OS 3.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
