Win What You Will With ‘The Sweepstakes App’

Price: $2.99    Score: 6/10    By Anna Papachristos

‘Free’ is everyone’s favorite four-letter f-word.  The concept of winning money or in-demand products is a grand concept and we are all willing to jump on such a bandwagon, as long as there’s no catch.

With The Sweepstakes App by Weberts LLC, users are asked to pay a mere $2.99 for the initial download of an app that may help them win a t-shirt, money or even and iPad!  Perfect for your iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch, The Sweepstakes App is a quick way to enter your name into the pool of thousands of other participants in hopes of winning something worthwhile.

To begin, users must of course have an Internet connection and valid email address.  Under the ‘Settings’ tab, users may login if they already have an account or, if they’re just starting off, they may create a new account.  Simply enter your full name, email address, create a username, and enter your desired password.  By doing so, users can then simply tap the ‘Submit Your Entry’ button on the Home Screen to quickly and effortlessly enter the sweepstakes.  You may enter every 60 minutes, which The Sweepstakes App will conveniently count down for you.

The Sweepstakes App assures users that they use a Third-Party Draw Service to determine the winner, meaning they have no influence over who wins the various drawings.  The ‘Winners’ tab lets users see who’s won past giveaways, listing the date they won, their username and the prize they won. Users can also follow The Sweepstakes App on Twitter to keep up-to-date with who has won what.  However, at the time of writing, it appears the list of winners has not been updated in about two weeks, which is odd considering they seemed to have consistently updated each week up until that point.

Things also get confusing when you read further into the details of the various giveaways.  Apparently $1000 was given away in April, and they plan to give away two 16GB iPad Wi-Fi devices at the end of May, as well as $100 each week that month.  And while it does not say anything definite within the app or on their website, a picture on The Sweepstakes App’s website alludes to the fact that June may lead to MacBook Pro giveaways.

Also, after claims of being able to use the app “forever,” one can see that the start date for weekly prize giveaways is 12:00am EST May 17, 2010, with an end date of 11:59pm EST July 31, 2010.  The monthly giveaways began at 12:00am EST May 1, 2010, with an end date of 11:59pm EST July 31, 2010 as well.  Both have a drawing date of August 1.  While I am still trying to figure out the logic to these dates myself, you can find this information with the rest of the fine print under the ‘About’ tab.

Users must be 13 years of age or older to enter, as well as a legal resident of the United States.  However, when attempting to access The Sweepstakes App’s page in the App Store, this product, which is supposedly sold only in the U.S. and Canadian stores, is claimed to not be available in the U.S. store.  No matter how many times I try searching for it by name within the store, even clicking on the link provided on the developer’s website leads to the same error message.

Perhaps you won’t mind simply entering the sweepstakes via their website, for that is the only way typical customers will be able to get their hands on The Sweepstakes App in any sense of the word.  Good luck to those who were hoping for an actual app, though.  With so much potential, it is sad to see an app like this fall to the wayside simply because of a few (fatal) flaws.

The Sweepstakes App is only open to U.S. residents and requires iPhone OS 3.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone and iPod Touch. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
