With this game, it’s not that it requires building of skill and points to succeed. It’s just flat out fun.
Spinning Streak, designed by Mad Media Labs, puts you in the spotlight as a coin spinning act climbing your way to the top. You know, like the guys who spin plates…but with coins (which I’ve never actually seen live, but there you go).
On each level, you have three sticks with three coins. Tap the coins with your thumbs to speed up the spin, and tap the stick to highlight it, which enables you to balance as they start to lean. The highlight only lasts for a few seconds, however.
In the beginning at least, there’s no real skill; I succeeded simply by frantically tapping the sticks and coins until the time was up. But as you progress, they get a little trickier to balance and the key is to choose when to highlight a stick and when not to – if two sticks are leaning in the opposite direction you’ll be in trouble highlighting them both.
The real fun of the game is getting to the next level. You start off playing a park for a few people out enjoying the sun. If you do well, a rather seedy looking gentlemen offers you the 3am spot at his nightclub. From there, you might get a text inviting you to do a guest spot on a talk show, and so on.
My one real complaint is there’s no saving a game – once you fail, you start over, so it’s pretty tough to get to your ultimate goal – a Vegas contract. But for a free game, this is pretty addicting and a lot of fun. Because of the role play and easy concept, this strikes me as one that could potentially entertain the kids as well.
Spinning Streak requires iPhone OS 3.1.2 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
