There are already so many storybook apps for kids out there. But do you have one that puts your child in the story?
When I Grow Up, an app designed by Inspiring Books, gives your child just that option. Without pictures, you have a cute story about a child wondering what he wants to be when he (or she) grows up. But on the main menu, you have the option of inserting a picture of your child’s face, and also one of “Mommy’s.” (This is my only small complaint – the child character can be filled by a boy or girl, but the parent is Mommy and wears a dress throughout. Maybe a generic parent for the next version so kids without mommies can insert their guardian into the story instead?)
You can select a photo from your album, or take one within the app. The photo appears in a face-shaped cutout, where you can zoom and move as necessary. You can even use your finger to rub away at the sides to get it as close to your natural face shape as possible (although you can only be so neat).
Afterwards, enter the story either with narration or without. Both come with cute sound effects, like child playing a piano or holding a chirping bird. Every page has moving images and great, colorful graphics. Your child will go through each day of the week wondering what to be – a musician, chef, vet, teacher, paleontologist, zookeeper or doctor. At the end, he can choose four of those seven to end the story.
I have seen kids enchanted with various iPhone games and stories, but honestly, the camera is one of their favorite apps as well. Allowing your child to put both her face and yours into an animated story will be a surefire hit. I definitely recommend checking this one out.
When I Grow Up requires iPhone OS 3.1 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
