With so much talk of good health and environmental concern lately, gardening is experiencing a boom right now. Even cityfolk like me are looking into getting a few herbs and veggies growing on the balcony. But gardening truly is a complicated art, and as with anything else, a good manual can be a lifesaver.
Potted Garden, designed by Illya Alvarado Diaz, might be the guide for you. If you are learning the basics of gardening, or if you’re trying to teach your kids the basics, this app is a fantastic resource.
The design is cute, with colorful graphics next to every item, but the information is detailed and thorough. From the main menu, you can browse the following categories:
- My Potted
The first few sections are arranged alphabetically, from asparagus to watercress. Not only can you type in a specific search, but you can filter by choosing any number of months to see what plants grow during that season. The amount of info you get on each plant is pretty impressive; the species, climate, harvest time, difficulty level, an illustrated timetable, notes, properties and instructions.
Each section has its own surprise. In “Pests,” I discovered a handy little chart with recipes for homemade pest repellents. You can see photos of the little buggers, too, if you’re not quite sure what that is that’s attacking your tomatoes. Add photos of your own gardening progress, and add tasks to keep track of what you need to do next in the “My Potted” section.
A beautiful photo accompanies each item, and there are also several helpful videos to browse. (A warning: the videos are in Spanish.) This app is easy enough for kids to maneuver around, although the younger ones might need help with some of the more in-depth information. If you’ve got a few plants on the patio or a full blown veggie garden, Potted Garden is a great resource to consider.
Potted Plant requires iPhone OS 3.1.3 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer in order to speed up the publication of this review.
