“The Itsy, Bitsy Spider” has been a beloved children’s rhyme for generations. Sending a positive message, the spider encourages anyone and everyone to persist and never give up on their dreams, even if they must start all over. Itsy the Spider by Ingenieria Digital Oviedo shares the same mentality.
Itsy the Spider’s main goal is to weave himself a web that will sling him to the stars. Users must help Itsy spin a web that will launch him into the stratosphere. Simply touch and object on the screen. Keep your finger on the screen, holding the touch as long as possible in order to ascend quicker.
The most dangerous part of your climb is knowing which items help move you along and which will send you tumbling to the bottom. With a ‘Help’ button (found on the main screen) that actually lives up to its name, users can take a walk through which flowers will support them, rocket flowers that will launch them, and the obstacles (bees, cacti and swaying sunflowers) that will send them falling to the bottom of the screen.
The ‘Play’ button on the main screen obviously begins the game. The ‘Records’ button will display the overall leaderboard, showing the high scores of all those who have played Itsy the Spider via OpenFeint. The icon in the bottom right corner, which looks like two gears, allows users to turn the game’s music on or off, as well as change the theme. Currently, users can switch between the default theme and the latest addition, Itsy’s New York theme, though more are soon to come.
With the use of OpenFeint, Itsy the Spider also opens up a new world of challenge and competition. Simply access the list of 16 achievements you can unlock using the ‘Achievements’ button on the main screen. These achievements can be seen under the tab marked by a D-pad icon. Use the ‘Itsy’ button in the top left to view the main menu featuring the Leaderboard, Achievements, Forums and Chat, Fan Club and Who’s Playing.
The tab marked by an icon of a person will take you to all of your OpenFeint account information. The tab marked by the OpenFeint symbol displays a menu with Featured Games, Friends’ Games, Developer’s Picks, Recommended and the Feint 5. Such easy access to a world of Itsy competitors makes the game even more addictive because, no matter how many times you fall, you truly do want to get back up again and see if you can finally rank on the leaderboard someday.
On the main screen there is also a button exclaiming there is an ‘iPad Contest.’ Simply agree to share your Itsy the Spider scores with friends on Facebook and you will automatically be entered in a raffle to win the new iPad! This gadget could be quite handy because Itsy the Spider seems like it would benefit from a larger screen. Because of the game’s fast-paced nature, one must constantly be on top of the next flower so they will not fall to the bottom. However, I noticed that even my fairly small thumbs were blocking a good portion of the screen, causing me to lose sight of some flowers and fall to my – well, Itsy’s – death.
Itsy the Spider requires iPhone OS 3.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone and iPod Touch. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
