There is a plethora of adjectives that could be used to describe an iPhone. Small, handy, cuddly, black, entertaining… Go ahead, re-read the list a few times. Don’t worry, though. You’re not imagining anything and there is no typo.
But who would’ve ever thought the word ‘cuddly’ might come to describe their handheld gadget? All one has to do is download Talk with Chippy by Christian Albert Mueller to quell this unsolved mystery. Talk with Chippy is a voice repeating application featuring Chippy, an adorable, animated chipmunk that will have you nuzzling up to your iPhone’s screen in no time.
Designed to repeat everything you say, Chippy will recite all your words right back to you in his cute chipmunk voice. There is no need to press any buttons. Simply start up Chippy and he will begin replicating whatever you say. To spice things up a bit, tap the ‘i’ icon underneath Chippy in order to alter his voice. Make his voice higher for a squeaky voice that sounds like it’s hyped up on helium, or deepen it for that slow motion sound effect.
Chippy’s soundboard will also keep him chattering when you aren’t talking up a storm. With over 15 pre-programmed sounds, Chippy squeaks, squeals and speaks and random intervals, always surprising you with what comes out next. One of his most charming saying is actually a short song in which he greets you with many “hellos” and “hi’s”, then concludes with a sweet “hasta la vista”, though none of his sounds and sayings can be adequately described.
Chippy is also quite responsive, allowing you to touch and interact with your on-screen buddy. Safer than those newfangled Zhu Zhu Pets everyone went crazy for over the holidays (and much more entertaining, too), Chippy has the ability to keep users of all ages amused. Drag your finger around the screen and his eyes will follow as you move. Rub his belly and giggle along as he laughs after being tickled. Shake your device and watch his eyes spin around after getting dizzy from the movement. Cry along with Chippy as he screams “Ow!” when you poke either eyeball. Even tap the ‘i’ icon to enable the clock and date feature, making him both a fun and useful companion.
The only drawback, which certainly cannot be avoided with such an app, is that iPod Touch users can only truly experience the joys of Chippy if they attach an external microphone to their device before starting Talk with Chippy. While they can easily access the soundboard without any add-ons, Chippy is best if used with an iPhone 3G or 3GS.
Perhaps some may consider Talk with Chippy an unnecessary app that serves no real productive purpose. Sure, it’s mainly for fun, but when you consider how many business-related apps are available for the iPhone and iPod Touch, there needs to be a few apps out there that alleviate some of the stress of daily life. And there is no better way to lighten your load than with a little laughter and a great, big smile. My advice? Download Chippy and tap his tail.
Talk with Chippy requires iPhone OS 3.0 or later and is compatible with the iPhone and iPod Touch. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
