I have to confess something up front here. See that adorable little picture to the left? That was the first thing I saw when I downloaded this app to my iPhone. And as it happens, I have a lab. A chocolate lab.
So I’ll try to remain unbiased, but be forewarned – I’m a sucker for dogs.
Henry Goes Camping, designed by Michael Mehlberg, is a storybook for children all about Henry the chocolate lab’s first camping trip. Your child has the option of reading the book himself, or reading the words along with narration.
With the narrator turned on, the pages turn automatically. In read-only mode, turning the page is easy, with just a tap on the left or right side. Tapping the screen on any other spot doesn’t disrupt the story – an important feature, as little ones like to touch the pictures! Double-tapping the screen allows you to close the book and switch back and forth between having narration or reading alone.
The pictures are adorable (and please remember my previously stated bias here!). The story uses actual photos of Henry’s camping trip with a watercolor effect, so your child can see him sleeping in the car, picking up sticks for the campfire, sniffing flowers, and playing at the lake.
As the first version of Henry Goes Camping, I think this app is quite good. A few updates I’d like to see in future versions would be highlighting the text in chunks of phrases during the narration, guiding the child’s eyes to follow along with the words and making the app even more educational. I also think a few short audio clips of Henry barking or sniffing would completely delight children.
At $0.99, this app would make a great addition to your storybook app collection – particularly if your child is as enamored with chocolate labs as I am!
Henry Goes Camping requires iPhone OS 2.0 or later and is compatible with the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. A small fee was paid by the developer to expedite the publication of this review.
