The days of penciling a student’s grades into a notebook are definitely over. Teachers can use iGrade for Teachers by Zysco to track grades, attendance and notes for their students. While this app can be used to make organizing student records easy for iPhone users, the release of the iPad will certainly make this app even more useful.
Users can manually input the names of their students, or import a list via copy and paste. When filling in the details of each student, you can add contact information for parents and any other notes you may want to reference in the future. iGrade for Teachers also allows you to create various groups; grade levels, subjects and categories of assignments. From the bottom of the screen, four icons allow you to navigate between the student list, tests, filters, and settings.
Attendance taking is very easy; from the list of students, tapping on the picture of the student (should you choose to upload one, otherwise a default icon will appear) will bring up the attendance screen, where you can mark a student absent or present. Tardiness can also be tracked.
Tests, quizzes, homework and extra credit can be entered and labeled. Grades may be entered in a variety of ways, including the percentage correct and A-F grading. Selecting the statistics icon from a student’s screen will show the student’s GPA, the number of tests taken and their average grades. Attendance records are also viewable in the statistics snapshot.
Filters allow you to isolate information about only certain subjects, groups, or time frames. After applying a filter, only the information you have selected will be reflected in the students’ records, and tapping the statistics icon will show the GPA and other information only relating to the filters applied.
Other features of iGrade for Teachers include:
- The ability to export student information
- The capacity to mass email all students
- A duplicate test feature
- The ability to custom weight grades and scores
- Easy addition of new categories, subjects, and groups
It would be nice to see the data be password protected; otherwise the days of erasing your grade in the teacher’s book could be replaced by the days of a quick delete and replace. Other than that, the app is a convenient and easy to navigate tool that I think educators will appreciate.
iGrade for Teachers is compatible with iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad and requires iPhone OS 3.1 or later. A small fee was paid by the developer to expedite the publication of this review.
