My dad loves to play Backgammon, for one reason. I’ve never beaten him at the game. I don’t know if anyone has ever beaten my father at Backgammon. While I might not like to play with him anymore, Backgammon Premium, from Trivial Technology, lets me play against people I might actually stand a chance against.
I won’t bore you with the general rules of Backgammon except to say that each player has pieces that must be moved “home.” Players take turns rolling dice in order to move their pieces along the board until they can reach home. Backgammon Premium also allows for the Nackgammon and Old English rules of Backgammon, so if you’re into those games, you have an all in one solution with Backgammon Premium.
Between both single player and over-the-air multiplayer through the plus+ gaming network and three different game modes, there’s plenty of gaming to be done. The plus+ gaming network works really well over Wi-Fi, but on my Edge iPhone, I had some trouble connecting. Players with 3G iPhones shouldn’t worry though.
I also really like that Backgammon Premium saved my scores and other statistics. Not only does the game store win-loss records for the single player mode, but it stores it in separate categories for wins and losses against the computer in easy, medium, and hard modes. Backgammon Premium also stores both the player’s and the computer’s dice roll stats. This might seem kind of needless, but if the system allows it, I like that it’s being taken advantage of.
While Backgammon is a difficult game to master, it shouldn’t be hard to pick up and play. Backgammon Premium is well aware of this and has an included a thorough tutorial. The tutorial isn’t interactive, which is the only thing I could really suggest for the game, but it does have a general “Basics” section, coupled with a “Scoring,” “Strategies,” and “Matched Games” sections. While all that text is helpful, an interactive tutorial might be an even speedier way of getting players into the game.
Backgammon Premium is easily the best Backgammon game you could could possibly find on the App Store. Download it today and start playing online now!
Backgammon Premium is compatible with the iPhone and iPod Touch. It requires the iPhone OS 3.0 or later. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
