For esignatures, personalized wallpaper, and especially for a unique avatar, check out My DNA. Designed by H. Rock Liao, this app uses a little bit of personal information about you to create an individualized graphic that the developer claims will be unlike anyone else’s.
Of course, this is (I’m assuming) all in good fun. While scientists do refer to your DNA as a sort of “barcode”, the barcode-style graphic generated by My DNA is randomized. However, it does make a nice little avatar that you’re guaranteed no one else will have.
To get your graphic, just enter your full name, birthday, and height (in feet/inches or centimeters), and the barcode is generated. You can choose the colors for both the barcode and the background to suit your tastes. For text, the graphic can be blank, or you can choose to have your name plus the “My DNA” logo, or just “My DNA”, on top.
The graphic itself is fine – it’s definitely different and pretty cool looking. For the science-savvy amongst you, you’ll notice that the “barcode” is actually a representation of gel electrophoresis – the method used in DNA typing. Despite the simple nature of the app, I’ll admit to stumbling around My DNA for a minute in the beginning. I expected to use the keyboard it provided to type my name in to enter my birthday and height as well, but instead I had to close the keyboard, go to “Birth date” and enter my birthday on the provided scroll wheel, close that, then enter my height. Not a big deal at all, but for a few seconds before realizing how it worked I thought the app was frozen.
There are a lot of color combinations to choose from, and I had fun making a few for my friends. The graphic saves directly to your camera roll, so it’s easy to share. One thing I was a little disappointed about was the Facebook button – I thought it would allow me to post my graphic on my feed, but instead it just took me to the My DNA Facebook page. I’m also a little unsure as to why this app is in the Productivity category – I would think Entertainment would be a more appropriate place.
The bottom line? If you’re the type to change your avatar daily, or if you want a funky fluorescent wallpaper, it’s a decent app for $1.99.
My DNA is compatible with iPhone and iPhone Touch (2nd generation) and requires iPhone OSS 3.1.2 or later.
