Vocabulator Offers Challenging Word Play

Word games are amongst the oldest brain teasers around, but they’re still just as fun today. Developed by Nexus6 Software, Vocabulator is a new game that will have you scratching your head as you try to make as many words as you can from the letters of a random scrambled word.

Vocabulator is listed by the developer as ideal for anyone over the age of four, but don’t let the simplistic pitch fool you. Yes, there are plenty of six letter words for kids to find. But grown ups will likely want to pull their hair out (in a good way of course) after trying to find a ten or eleven letter word from the scrambled smorgasbord of letters served up in Vocabulator.

Although the game looks a bit too kid-friendly to find widespread appeal amongst more mature gamers, the game play is awesome and every bit as addictive as a word game can be. Not much differentiates Vocabulator from similar word games, but the educational overtones for both kids and adults make the application a worthwhile download.

Some of the most noteworthy features of the game include:

  • Every game has built-in rewards as you find and enter words. Plus, you’re “cheered on” until you get a perfect score.
  • Shake to shuffle the letters before you give up, as a different view may give you some much needed help.
  • Silent mode, so the boss doesn’t know you’re playing games in a meeting.
  • Statistics help you keep track of how you’re performing.
  • Team play makes it possible to play with friends and family.

Vocabulator is unique in the sense that it offers the ability to focus on several aspects of word play that stand to improve one’s vocabulary, like whether or not you must use a particular letter in each puzzle. The comprehensive settings page really allows one great control over the game play of Vocabulator, which is among the game’s coolest attributes.

While nothing is overtly groundbreaking about Vocabulator, the game is still extremely well executed and certainly more conducive to learning than most within this particular gaming genre. For instance, at the end of every game, the list of possible words is presented along with an automatic link to dictionary.com. Making it possible to learn while you play, Vocabulator is definitely fun and is colorfully presented.

Vocabulator requires iPhone OS 3.1.2 or later and is compatible with both iPhone and iPod Touch.
