Paris is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Her history and architecture, arts and culture attract millions of tourists every year who come to experience the wonder that is La Ville-Lumière – The City of Light. Developed by Geodio, Visit Paris is a new iPhone app that lets you explore Paris like never before.
When you first open Visit Paris you’ll be prompted to let the app use your current location. If you’re not lucky enough to actually be in Paris, you’ll be asked whether you would like to ‘visit Paris from a distance’. You’ll then be taken to the home screen, which is split into two parts – in the upper segment is a map of Paris and in the lower is a video library of tourist attractions.
The map of the city is overlaid with small circles, each containing photos of prominent landmarks and places of interest. Tapping on any one of these photos will open its corresponding movie, providing additional information about that location. The movies themselves vary in length from 15 seconds to several minutes, and take advantage of both 2D and 3D graphics in addition to archive photo and film to bring Paris to life. You can learn about the man behind the Eiffel tower, the building of Notre Dame, explore the Louvre and discover many other interesting facts about the city – there are 50 videos in total for you to watch.
If you find the map view too cumbersome, you can also browse through the videos by tapping the small Eiffel Tower icon in the lower left of the screen. Here, each video is accompanied by a short description and info on running time. Simply tap the movie to start watching. Keep in mind that the videos are not actually part of the app and you will need an internet connection to access them – but once you’ve downloaded them once you can watch them as many times as you like. There is also a video search feature, which is a nice inclusion, as the images on the map of Paris are rather small and the majority were unidentifiable to me – and I’ve been to Paris.
If you do find yourself in the city, you can take advantage of the GPS-enabled features and utilize the Visit Paris app as an interactive guide. Even if you’re unable to access the videos, there is also accompanying text for each one which can be found by tapping the book icon in the lower navigation bar.
If you’re planning to go, have already been or just want to learn more about Paris – for just $1.99, Visit Paris is worth a look.
Visit Paris requires the iPhone OS 3.0 or later and is compatible with both iPhone and iPod Touch (2nd generation).
