Pinball Wizard: Design Your Own Pinball Magic

Price: $1.99    Score: 8/10    By Sarah ParkerPinball Wizard!

Have you ever imagined what it takes to design a great pinball machine, making the game difficult enough for hard-core fans but still enjoyable for first-time players? Now you can try out some of your pinball design skills with Pinball Wizard from developer Zidware, Inc.. Pinball Wizard was designed as a customizable, American retro-style pinball game by John A. Popadiuk, Jr., a prominent Chicago pinball machine designer.

Pinball Wizard is styled as a 1970’s pinball game, but what’s unique about this app is that the user can actually make customizations to the pinball table design. There are 3 main features to choose from when you open up Pinball Wizard – Design, Play and Scores. The Design option allows you to move 3 pieces to places of your choosing. Once you have put the movable features where you want, you can then play your customized pinball game. The user can choose to have the game’s scoreboard display local high scores (your own) or global high scores. Once you have played your pinball game, you also have the option to post your score to the global leader board or Facebook.

Although Pinball Wizard has fantastic graphics and sound effects, I was expecting more customization options in the game. Pinball Wizard is sold as a “design your own pinball table” game, but there are only 3 pieces that the user can actually change. It would be nice if there were more variety in the number and variety of parts available to the player. The game could also use a better tutorial, with a little more info on the rules and how to utilize some game features (such as the tilt).

Overall, Pinball Wizard has a great concept as well as some awesome graphics and sound effects to back it up. The game play is realistic and the ball moves very well. I was hoping for more variety in game design options, and I think that Pinball Wizard could use some more user instructions, but Pinball Wizard is still a very unique iPhone game that will be a huge hit with pinball enthusiasts.

Pinball Wizard! is compatible with iPhone and iPod Touch; requires OS 2.0 or later

You must have been looking at a “fixed” version of Pinball Wizard than the one I looked at. The one I looked at, the flippers were totally messed up and barely worked at all. I lost he ball many times because the flippers just didn’t work. The flippers looked like they were “loose” when they flipped.

As pinball games go, this one was “maybe” a 2 out of 10 for allowing the 3 bumpers to be positioned where ever they user wanted them. However, the rest of the pinball table elements were poorly rendered during play and the game itself was just aweful.

Mind you, I’m a little tainted since I enjoy pinball games like The Deep, Wild West Pinball, Monster Pinball, etc… However, Pinball Wizard didn’t come anywhere even close to those titles.

Dave, the flippers seemed to work fine when I played the game. Pinball Wizard is pretty basic and good for beginners or for people who like simpler games.

Maybe it’s a 3G vrs. 3GS thing, but the game was pretty much unplayable on my iPhone. Fortunately there are plenty of excellent pinball games for the iPhone/iPod touch.

I’m just glad I didn’t have to pay for Pinball Wizard.
