Patch Farkle is Dicey… in a Good Way

Fans of dice games will know that there are a lot of places where it just wouldn’t be practical to play. Sure, you could roll your dice on the bus… but good luck finding them. Patch Farkle by Paze Interactive gives you all the fun of Farkle wherever and with whomever you want. Patch Farkle is a slick, mobile version of the game of chance in which the first player to 10,000 wins.

I’m always a fan of an app that can use the iPhone’s accelerometer in interesting ways. In Patch Farkle, you really feel like you’re rolling the dice when you shake your iPhone. You can tip your device forward or side to side and hear all the sounds you would expect to hear while rolling real dice. The system isn’t 100% perfect since the actual dropping motion takes a little longer to register sometimes than you would expect, but this is easy to deal with and the experience is enjoyable as a whole.

If you’re new to the game of Farkle, the rules are fairly easy, but can take a few games to get used to. All numbers equal 100 points if you roll three or more of the same number at a time, except for 5 which equals an automatic 50 and 1 which is an automatic 100. These rules are explained more thoroughly, although more convoluted, in the help menu. Essentially, if you don’t get a 1, you don’t get a 5 and you don’t get more than three of a kind, you “Farkle,” which means you lose any points you may have gotten in this turn and move on to the next player. You can also choose to “Bank” your points, ending your turn and keeping your points until your next turn. These rules, initially confusing as they may be, are easy to follow in-game because the game doesn’t really allow you to do anything else besides follow them. You can only tap to select the dice that legally give you points and a Farkle is detected automatically.

Fans of dice games will find Patch Farkle an enjoyable time-eater whether you’re playing with friends or going head to head with the computer. The only hick-ups I found were a slightly tacky translucent box around some of the buttons and a text glitch which I think may have only been a one-time event. Otherwise, Patch Farkle is a smooth, easy to pickup, casual game for all ages.

Patch Farkle requires iPhone OS 2.2.1 or greater and is compatible with both iPhone and iPod Touch.

This is Wes Booker with Paze Interactive, makers of Patch Farkle. I just wanted to let everyone know that the app has been updated to address the speed and performance issues. So, give it a try and thanks for playing.
