Developed by Bottle Rocket, d2u Transcriber is an iPhone app that provides the user with a full and professional transcribing service, available at the push of a button. With d2u Transcriber, you create and upload your voice recording and an actual person will transcribe your file into a document and email it back to you – all within 24 hours.
When you first open up the app you’ll be prompted to create a new d2u account and taken to a webpage where you can enter and submit your details. Once submitted, you’ll need to load your account with some money via PayPal before you can use the actual transcribing service. While the app itself is free to download, naturally for a service of this type there is a fee associated with the use of the app and d2u charges £1.50 (inc. VAT) per minute of recorded audio. While based in the UK, the d2u service is also now available in the US app store.
The recording interface of d2u Transcriber strongly resembles the native iPhone options screen which appears during a phone call. On this screen, you have full control over your audio files, with the option to record, play, start over, add title, categorize as well as check the status of the transcribe.
Once you have made a recording, you can give the file a name, save it, and then you have the option of uploading it to the d2u servers. Once received, your audio recording is then transcribed by d2u and after passing through two draft checking processes and a final proof reading, you are notified that the finished document is ready via email. You will need to log into your d2u account in order to download the file, which is delivered in .doc format. For files less than 5 minutes long, d2u promises to deliver a 90 minute turnaround time and files longer than 5 minutes yield a 24 hour turnaround time.
On a test file I sent to d2u, which was just shy of 1 minute long, the fully transcribed file was returned to me within half an hour – an impressive response time. The transcription itself was essentially perfect – both spelling and grammar were spot on.
While the general idea of sending personal or sensitive information an unknown 3rd party may not be somewhat nontraditional, d2u promises secure and confidential handling of your data, and all uploads to d2u servers are encrypted. If your business or line of work has a need for a transcribing service, you may find that d2u Transcriber is able to save you both time and money with their efficient and cost effective mobile transcription service.
d2u Transcriber requires iPhone OS 3.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone and iPod Touch (2nd generation).
