For adults, the days of simple math have come and gone. Now math is a complicated nuisance used while balancing the checkbook or paying the bills. But for children, basic addition and subtraction can be just as confusing as figuring out why there is $20 you just can’t account for in the bank this month.
But learning such fundamental building blocks doesn’t have to be tedious or difficult, and with Flashcard Champion Basic Math by Renkara Media Group, Inc., kids can test their knowledge in the basic skills of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division as they practice with entertaining, fast-paced arithmetic drills.
Utilizing numbers 0-12, Flashcard Champion Basic Math is geared for children ages 4-11. The home screen is simple and straightforward, prompting users to pick how many questions they want to answer in one set (10, 20, 30 or 40) and which type of arithmetic they wish to practice (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division). Once you’ve made your choice, simply tap on the apple marked ‘Start’ at the bottom of the screen to begin!
Each problem comes with six possible answers to choose from. Users must tap the one they believe is correct in a timely fashion as each set is timed. If you are right, the correct tally will increase, but if you are wrong, it will be credited to the incorrect tally. Sets that result in a new high score are rewarded by allowing users to enter their name into the ranking. High scores are tracked for each specific arithmetic type (multiplication, addition etc) and the five highest scores in that category are recorded along with details of the number of questions answered correctly and the time taken to complete the set. Kids can enter their name, leave it anonymous, or skip recording the score altogether.
Flashcard Champion Basic Math is great because kids can not only use the app as a study tool, but as a competitive game. By challenging friends and siblings to play along, kids may grow more determined to improve their skills and show their competitors who’s the true know-it-all.
The attractive green chalkboard-like interface, with its white, chalk-written font, is visually appealing and grabs your attention. The sound effects, most notably the noise of a cheering crowd after achieving a new high score upon finishing a set, is a fun, encouraging way to keep kids testing their skills again and again. However, under the convenient ‘Options’ button (marked by a pencil and ruler icon) in the bottom right corner of the home screen, parents can turn off the sound effects if necessary, as well as reset the high scores.
Flashcard Champion Basic Math is a beautiful study tool, and though made for kids, adults may even find it to be a fun way to pass the time and keep their brains active and up-to-speed with their children. And perhaps, in a future update, Flashcard Champion Basic Math will offer a randomized option, allowing for sets that include all four types of math to be quizzed at the same time, so the advanced scholar can show the kids on the playground who really knows their stuff.
Flashcard Champion Basic Math requires iPhone OS 3.0 or later and is compatible with the iPhone and iPod Touch.
