With the “mature” iPhone puzzle-gamer in mind, developer Madtown Software has come up with a new game that combines touch-and-slide jigsaw mechanics with a “pin up” girls theme.
Pin Up Puzzle only really features one game type, but there are 3 different categories of puzzle images (I’ll let you guess as to what the three categories are!), and each category features 5 different images. You can tap on any one of the categories and cycle through the available images. The photos are all professional and there’s nothing too sketchy to be found.
When completing each of the puzzles, there are 3 difficulty levels to choose from, which determines the number of tiles in the puzzle. Easy starts at just 8 tiles, while hard takes it up to a total of 24 tiles – which makes for a serious challenge.
The gameplay mechanic of Pin Up Puzzle is extremely simple – each game starts with a random assortment of the puzzle pieces (tiles) on the playing grid. You simply tap and hold the tile you want to move, then slide it into the vacant space. There is only ever one vacant space on the playing grid, so you are only able to move the surrounding tiles into that space. By reassorting the tiles you are able to piece the puzzle back together one move at a time. A timer runs at the top of each puzzle and you race against the clock to complete the game as fast as possible. If you finish the puzzle, you’re congratulated with a photo of the pin up girl from that puzzle and have the option of saving your high score into a Top 10 scoreboard.
Pin Up Puzzle has music – but it’s a tad cheezy. It sounds kind of reminscent of the opening theme to Becker with a wailing electric guitar running on a 30-second loop. It’s easy enough to switch off though – there’s a setting in the main menu.
Overall, not a bad game – but a little bit more variety in the actual gameplay itself would help to make things a little more interesting.
Pin Up Puzzle requires the iPhone OS 2.2.1 or later and is compatible with iPhone and iPod Touch
