Growing up in the country, I know how tough a lifestyle farming can be. It takes a lot of effort to take food from seed to table, but it can also be very rewarding. Developed by iMouse, FarmLand takes the nostalgic fun of farming, turning it into a micromanagement puzzle game that delivers on all fronts.
FarmLand gets off to a bit of a slow start, with some easy first levels and tutorials, but quickly ramps up in speed and difficulty. There are 30 levels in all, and each level can be completed in a number of different ways, with the score you receive for the level being determined by how quickly you complete the level and it’s goals. There’s also other things to consider, like crop yields and transport, making for a real challenge. Farmland also features 3 cool little mini-games which can be an entertaining distraction from the main Adventure and Survival game modes.
The buildings in FarmLand perform tasks such as turning bread into cupcakes, and also have multiple levels of productivity, adding depth to the gameplay. The objectives also change a lot throughout Farmland – keeping things interesting. You may need to raise a certain amount of money, or produce and sell a certain number of a specific crop. At the more advanced levels of the game, it gets very hectic, but fun, managing everything and trying to score that gold trophy.
The updates for FarmLand are free and the latest update has added leaderboards into the mix – all you have to do is enter your email to submit your score. And just in time for the festive season, the update also brings a delightful new Christmas theme to the game. And what would Christmas be without presents? iMouse have set up a high-score contest and will be giving the person who obtains the number one high score in level twenty nine with a brand new 32GB iPod Touch!
The graphics in FamLand definitely err on the cutesy side – but the artwork is bright and richly illustrated. There’s also a lot of gameplay here for your money – it took me about half an hour just to get to level 5! All things considered, for $0.99 – FarmLand is not a bad buy.
Farmland requires iPhone OS 2.2 or later and is compatible with both iPhone and iPod Touch.
